Honouring the life and legacy of Hon. Murray Sinclair, Mazina Giizhik
It is with profound sadness we receive news of the passing of the Hon. Murray Sinclair, Mazina Giizhik (the One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky). The 91̽»¨app (91̽»¨app) extends our deepest condolences to the family and all those whose lives he touched.
Murray Sinclair is the voice of truth and reconciliation. His words are woven into the fabric of the work we embark on together in 91̽»¨app. He is a grandfather to what guides our practice and pedagogy. His impact cannot be overstated.
As Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, as Senator, as a lawyer, and as Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge, his life’s work has called us to action.
He reminded us that “education got us into this mess and education is what will get us out.” He challenged us as educators to ask ourselves “Who am I?” and “Who do I want to be?”
Culturally, he called us to action by living a meaningful traditional life.
Personally, he called us to action as a proud and caring father and grandfather.
Among the staff of 91̽»¨app, his legacy inspires us as we work diligently to ensure the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action are at the heart of our collective aspirations for the community we serve. His vision will continue to guide us as we strive to make Canada a more just and compassionate society.
In a statement, his family has requested that those who are able, in lieu of flowers, please donate to . Funds will prioritize Indigenous women, children, families, and Survivors.
